Introduction and Thanks

126 students from 55 schools and clubs gathered in the Duncraig Senior High School gymnasium on 19 November for the 2022 Junior Interclub Chess Tournament. There were over 50 players new to chess tournaments - an encouraging sign for the future growth of chess in Perth!

In just over 3 hours of play, from 1 pm until 4 pm, a total of 648 games of chess were played in one giant pool in an "Arena Ladder Teams" format, over-the-board. Time control was 10 minutes + 2 seconds increment. The games were not ACF rated.

There were perpetual trophies, book prizes (signed by FM Patrick Gong), medallions, and extra gifts on offer for First, Second, and Third place teams in three divisions (A, B, C).

(Note the big silver trophy is the WA State Champion's trophy - brought by FM Patrick Gong for display).

Detailed Standings

The number on the left of a player's name is their "Final Position" on the Ladder.

The top four players' positions are added to form the Team's score (marked with *).

The number/number (eg 7/9) on the right of their name is their game results - this is their wins versus the number of games played. 1 point for a win, 0.5 points for a draw.

These points are usually used in tournaments to determine the winners. They were not used in this tournament and are only included for interest.

In this tournament, the winners were determined by their position (or height) on the ladder - pictured below.

Note

Winning more games does not necessarily mean the player will have a higher score. What matters is WHO they won against. The top player must beat the 2nd highest player on the ladder, not win the most games.

Club and School Groups

Many schools and clubs were not able to field enough players to fill three divisions.
So, the next best solution was for the players to be divided into eight groups based on their geographical location.

Player and Team Divisions

There were many players without accurate ACF ratings. Rather than guessing the divisions, all players played in one big Arena pool - any player could play any player from a different group provided they were "close enough" in terms of their place on the ladder.

After 1.5 hours, a preliminary rating was computed for all players and used to place all players into the A, B ,and C divisions. These divisions determined which Team that player's score was assigned to.

eg, a B division Player in the Central group would have their score added to Central Team B's score.

Note: These divisions did not change who they could be paired with - all players still played in the same pool. Since the division did not affect the pairing, we were able to reallocate players to different divisions during the tournament.

Fortunately, it did not take long before the players understood the steps and system, and the tournament ran smoothly for most of the time. Parents and players were able to track the progress continuously just outside the venue on a set of large TV screens. After some explaining, everyone seemed to understand the scoring method. Some parents gave very positive feedback - that the format made a lot of sense and worked very well.

Student Volunteers

We were fortunate to have some very capable student volunteers to help at the tournament: Georgina, Adriana, Kane, Evie, Chelsea, Nicholas, Michelle and Mia. They helped to set up and pack up the venue, run the computer scoring system, make popcorn and fairy floss, and generally help out on the day!

Game results were entered on three computers, manned by our trusty student volunteers from Duncraig SHS. They were kept very busy, with a game finishing on average every 16 seconds! For their hard work and calmness under pressure, the volunteers received the biggest applause at the end of the tournament.

Arbiters

We had quite a number of arbiters on the day:

  • Alan Wolstencroft (CAWA President and Dalkeith JCC)

  • Dylan Gough (CAWA Councillor and SSJC)

  • Josh Davoll (Kingsley)

  • Hugo Louw (Kingsley)

  • Ethan Dadras (Kingsley)

  • Troy Cove (Rotary Club Hillarys)

  • Lachlin Cove (Rotaract Club Hillarys)

  • FM Patrick Gong

Thanks to them, any problems were quickly and calmly dealt with, and there were no serious problems on the day at all.

Also thanks to Evan Yeung (Dalkeith JCC) for helping guide players at the computer screens and explaining the numbers!

Family Chill-out Zone

While the chess was progressing busily inside, outside the venue there was a chill-out zone run by student and parent volunteers from Duncraig SHS. Parents and siblings enjoyed a coffee truck, some comfortable couches, a couple of giant chess sets and some other giant-sized games. There was also face-painting and balloons for the younger kids, thanks to Beatriz Levia!

Players paused between rounds to enjoy the fairy floss and popcorn. Multiple times. I know one player had 6 fairy flosses! Not recommended by your friendly dentist, but it did seem to help his performance over the board ....... hmm!

Get in quick, this van was very popular!

This girl enjoyed her time outside!

Casual chess games on the big chess set

Families relaxed outside with the giant chess set,

a coffee van, and some really beautiful weather

Parents were able to shelter away from the hubbub and get some work done...

and play with a balloon!

See you next time!

We are very proud that the tournament went so well ! See you there next year ?

Cross Table

Players listed in order of their final standing (their Level in the ladder).

There are no rounds, so each player simply has all their games listed in the order played.

The game result is like so: + for a win. - for a loss. = for a draw.
W if played as white. B if played as black.
The number is the opponent Number (the first column: No)
