Can I Join?

So you would like to play chess at our club?

We welcome players, young or old, of different skill levels, but there are a few factors to consider:

WHAT WE DO AT THE CLUB?

We primarily play games in a flexible Arena format.  Games are rated within the club, so you can track your progress.

We only have one major tournament a year for our regular players- our one and only Kingsley Chess Club Championship.

We do provide some training for players who have been at our club for some time, but we do not offer a traditional class format, and we do not train beginners in the basics of chess.

DO I HAVE TO COMMIT TO COMING EVERY WEEK?

Our flexible "Arena" format means you do not have to come every week.  If you are a FIFO worker, or sick, or simply too busy, it is absolutely fine to skip the club night.

This is a big difference compared with most clubs who run long "Swiss" style tournaments, and require players to attend every week (forfeits and byes can disrupt the tournament).

WHAT ARE THE AGE LIMITS?

We welcome all ages.

Juniors
We welcome Primary and Highschool aged players.

Parents
We encourage parents to play.  If your child is a member, then parents can play for free.

University-students, Adults and Seniors
We welcome and encourage older players to join and play!

WHAT SKILL LEVEL SHOULD I BE AT?

There is a focus on playing rather than learning, so players are expected to know how to play chess and be able to reliably beat Bot number 2 (ReBoot) on ChessKid.com, link: https://www.chesskid.com/play/computer

It is free to Register and play against the first three Bots on chesskid.com -- consider registering and giving it a try.

We also have some strong players, ACF ~ 1600, Lichess ~ 2000, Chess.com ~1800, and are always keen to build our numbers at the top end.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

We provide all the chess-playing equipment.

Bring yourself and a water bottle (although there are drink fountains at the venue),
just remember to take your water bottle home with you!

WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?

We are located in North Woodvale, one of the most northern clubs in Perth. You can find us on Google Maps by typing in "Kingsley Chess Club".
However, we wouldn't want our players to have to drive too far, so consider joining another club closer to your home.

Check the CAWA website for other clubs:

WHAT IS THE FINANCIAL COST?

Our standard fee is $50 per school term (4 terms a year, usually 10 weeks each).

We offer a discount if you pay for the entire calendar year, and for siblings.

If you can only come for half of the term, or every second week, we offer the ability to pay a reduced amount.

VOLUNTEERING

We are a parent volunteer-run, not-for-profit registered incorporation.

All our fees are used for the benefit of our members, including:

We encourage and expect everyone to pitch in and help run and grow our club.
